The Good Smoothie Guide

Anyone can stick a few things in a blender and call it a smoothie. It take thought and true smoothie passion to make an epic one. We all have our favourites but any smoothie should have the same, basic components: liquid, fruit, protein, greens, fats, bonus’.
Here are some examples of each ‘group’…
Liquid…coconut milk, whole milk, fruit juice, water, almond milk, soy milk, hemp milk, oat milk, rice milk, coconut water
Fruit…Strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, mango, apple, banana, raspberry, mango, peach, nectarine, blackberries, pear
Protein…tofu (silken), greek yogurt, soy yogurt, nuts
Greens (i’ll be honest- I often sub these for extra fruit)… cucumber, spinach, chars, kale, arugula, lettuce
Fats…avocado, peanut butter, hazelnut butter, almond butter, coconut oil, flax seed oil
Bonus…cinnamon, wheatgerm, ginger, cocoa powder, cocoa nibs, honey, agave nectar, protein powder (I’ll use half a scoop/a full scoop-not a tsp), mixed spice, chocolate chips, oats, dried fruits
Obviously you will need to adjust quantities according to how your mix is blending but I have put some of the blends that I often put in my Nutribullet (its better than any blender!) below.
Super Berry

70g Strawberry
70g Blueberry
50g Frozen Cherries
250ml Whole Milk
1 tbsp Greek Yogurt
2 tsp Almond Butter
1 tsp Dried Cranberries
Go Ape
1 Banana
200ml Coconut Milk
1 tbsp Cashews
50g Cucumber
1 tbsp Cocoa Nibs
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
Sex on the Beach
1 Peach
70g Pineapple
200ml Cranberry Juice
75g Soy Yogurt
1 tsp Coconut Oil
1 tsp Honey
Optional: 1 splash of Vodka (an optional extra that I always take advantage of)
Fudge it…(not one for the dieters…you can always throw some whey protein in if it makes you feel better!)
1 Banana
100g Ice Cream
30g Fudge (My homemade stuff is perfect for this!)
30g Chocolate Chips
70ml Whole Milk
1tsp Hazelnut butter
A smoothie doesn’t have to be healthy…you can treat yourself every now and then but they are great as a snack or for breakfast (if I am having it for breakfast I tend to throw some rolled oats into the blender to give it some substance). Its best to just get into the kitchen and get friendly with your blender…trial and error. Just make sure to write your quantities down as you go, theres nothing worse than making an amazing smoothie and not remembering exactly what went into it!
